Sandtown Collective
The Sandtown-Winchester community in West Baltimore urgently needs a functioning recreation center and preserved green space. The closure of the Lillian Jones Recreation Center in 2021 has deeply impacted residents, removing a vital hub for fitness, social interaction, and community events, including its role as the area’s only polling site. While plans for a new center are slated for 2030, the proposal to build it on Pauline Fauntleroy Park would strip Sandtown of its only large green space an essential oasis amid years of neglect. Instead, we advocate for renovating the existing center or creating temporary community spaces while preserving the park. The Lillian Jones Recreation Center was an important part of the Sandtown-Winchester community, providing a safe and essential space for fitness, learning, social gatherings, and civic engagement. It served residents of all ages, offering opportunities for children to play and grow while adults participated in group activities and community meetings. Since its closure in 2021, the community has been left without this vital resource, significantly impacting resident’s well-being and sense of connection. While there are plans to construct a new recreation center by 2030, the proposal to build it on Pauline Fauntleroy Park a cherished green space and the only large park in the area has raised concerns. This three-acre park serves as a vital refuge amidst urban neglect, offering a stark contrast to the surrounding decay. Sandtown urgently needs both the restoration of recreation spaces and the preservation of its green space to ensure a sustainable, healthy, and connected future for all residents.
